We've all seen them -- those "news" stories that pop up in your Facebook feed or your Twitter. "Deodorant causes breast cancer." "Cancer preventing diet saves lives!" "Don't microwave your food. It causes brain tumors." "Cell phones linked to brain cancer" (really this one is usually how it causes bad parenting, but whatever.) Prior to knowing about my mutation, I used to joke that everything's going to kill us eventually or that everything causes cancer. Now, I look at it only a little differentlly. Choose Your own Adventure (or Mastectomy)

To go along with the recent blog I posted on Philly.com , I created the below decision tree. It's confusing and messy, much like the actual decision process we, as previvors (and survivors if you have the time for this process) undergo to find our path to cancer prevention. This decision is not an easy one to come to. This is not a boob job or an augmentation. It is total removal of your breast tissue (from collarbone down around your ribs) and replacement, if chosen, of that body part that you've lived with for at least one decade, if not so many more. I wish all my fellow previvors the luxury of time and the understanding that you deserve to be as happy as possible with the results of this crappy choice we make. Be a 12-year-old boy and look at all the boobs. Know your options. Demand the best for yourself. We are worth that.

Baby steps (or no-more-baby steps)

So we are renaming Tuesday to Tubes-day. It will be the day I take my first baby steps on my journey to embracing the title 'previvor' and a surgeon removes my Fallopian tubes (and not have any more babies). This isn't an option most people know about, but the research over the past few years is leaning toward showing that up to 75% of ovarian cancers start in the fallopian tube s. So, for a BRCA mutation carrier, the thought is this could be a preventive measure taken without throwing a 34-year-old into surgical menopause. Menopause, when it happens naturally, carries a lot of possible issues for women from the known hot flashes and mood swings to the lesser discussed bone, heart and mental health issues. To endure any or all of those at such a young age and without the gradual progression means it's all that more impactful and inconvenient. For me, there were/are two other factors at play.
